Grammaticality Judgments and Linguistic Methodology
نویسنده
چکیده
This papers deals with grammaticality judgments and their use as evidence in linguistic theory. Based on a review of the recent literature on linguistic judgments and their elicitation, the theoretical significance of judgment data is discussed, and an overview of the relevant experimental findings is provided. A number of linguistic and non-linguistics factors that bias grammaticality judgments are identified, and the the use of experimental methods for eliciting more reliable judgment data is advocated. A shorter version of this paper will appear in the Journal of Logic, Language and Information.

Degrees of Grammaticality as Evidence for Suboptimal Linguistic Structures
Intuitive judgments of the acceptability of linguistic utterances constitute the primary source of evidence in linguistic theory. However, our understanding of what speakers actually do when they make such judgments is far from complete. Recently, two psycholinguistic studies bearing on this question have become available: Schütze (1996) provides a broad review of the relevant psychological fin...
متن کاملA stochastic OT account of paralinguistic tasks such as grammaticality and prototypicality judgments
It has been observed that grammaticality judgments do not necessarily reflect relative corpus frequencies: it is possible that structure A is judged as more grammatical than structure B, whereas at the same time structure B occurs more often in actual language data than structure A. In recent work (Boersma & Hayes 2001), we have used Stochastic Optimality Theory to model grammaticality judgment...
متن کاملIs syntactic knowledge probabilistic? Experiments with the English dative alternation
Theoretical linguistics traditionally relies on linguistic intuitions such as grammaticality judgments for data. But the massive growth of language technologies has made the spontaneous use of language in natural settings a rich and easily accessible alternative source of data. Moreover, studies of usage as well as intuitive judgments have shown that linguistic intuitions of grammaticality are ...
متن کاملAdvancing Linguistics Between the Extremes: Some thoughts on Geoffrey Sampson’s Grammar without Grammaticality
The ready availability of large corpora has opened a range of interesting possibilities for linguistic research, and Geoffrey Sampson’s article illustrates that a corpus-based perspective can also motivate revisiting the general direction and methodology of linguistic research. At the same time, the discussion in Sampson’s article pushes two issues to rather extreme conclusions, which I think c...
متن کاملSyntactic Judgment Experiments
Informal judgments of sentence acceptability have long been the primary source of evidence about grammaticality in syntax, and have been controversial just as long. In the past decade, there has been growing interest in collecting and analyzing acceptability judgments according to the formal protocols of experimental psycholinguistics, an approach sometimes called experimental syntax. This arti...
